Primary Footwear (Shoes/Boots)
Choosing the right footwear for the Camino is crucial, and the debate between boots and trail runners continues. Boots offer robust ankle support, durability, and protection against rough terrain, making them ideal for those who prefer a more structured feel and plan to encounter varied conditions. They are often waterproof, which is a bonus in wet weather but can be heavier and less breathable. On the other hand, trail runners provide lightweight comfort, superior breathability, and quicker drying times, making them a favorite among those seeking a more agile and less constrictive experience. They excel in dry conditions and are easier on the feet over long distances. However, they offer less ankle support and may wear out faster on rugged terrain. Ultimately, the choice depends on your personal preference, hiking style, and the specific conditions you'll encounter on the Camino. Whichever you choose, make sure to break them in well before your journey to avoid blisters and ensure maximum comfort. I trained in the street version before the Camino and swapped to my Camino trail running shoes a couple weeks prior to departure. Have since bought 3 more pairs of the same shoes.
