Weight (grams)
Backpack
Fit is the most important feature of your pack. After that, it's all personal choice (size, weight, available side pouches, stowage, etc). Selecting the right backpack is vital for a successful Camino journey. Choose a lightweight, durable backpack with a capacity of 30-40 liters, which is sufficient to carry all your essentials without being overly burdensome. Look for a design with adjustable, padded shoulder straps, a hip belt, and a ventilated back panel to ensure comfort and support during long walks. Multiple compartments and external pockets can help keep your gear organized and easily accessible. Features such as a hydration sleeve, rain cover, and attachment points for trekking poles can enhance convenience. Ensure the backpack fits well and distribute weight evenly to prevent strain and discomfort. A well-chosen backpack is your best companion on the Camino.

Primary Footwear (Shoes/Boots)
Choosing the right footwear for the Camino is crucial, and the debate between boots and trail runners continues. Boots offer robust ankle support, durability, and protection against rough terrain, making them ideal for those who prefer a more structured feel and plan to encounter varied conditions. They are often waterproof, which is a bonus in wet weather but can be heavier and less breathable. On the other hand, trail runners provide lightweight comfort, superior breathability, and quicker drying times, making them a favorite among those seeking a more agile and less constrictive experience. They excel in dry conditions and are easier on the feet over long distances. However, they offer less ankle support and may wear out faster on rugged terrain. Ultimately, the choice depends on your personal preference, hiking style, and the specific conditions you'll encounter on the Camino. Whichever you choose, make sure to break them in well before your journey to avoid blisters and ensure maximum comfort. I trained in the street version before the Camino and swapped to my Camino trail running shoes a couple weeks prior to departure. Have since bought 3 more pairs of the same shoes.

Socks
Socks are essential for maintaining foot hygiene and comfort on the Camino. Choose socks made from moisture-wicking, quick-drying materials like merino wool (best option) or synthetic blends to keep your feet dry and prevent blisters - AVOID COTTON. Look for socks with cushioned soles for added comfort and support during long walks. If walking in the heat of the Summer, consider thinner socks to keep your feet from sweating. Consider packing two extra pairs to rotate daily and wash as needed.
25
Quick-dry Shorts
Quick-dry shorts are essential for staying comfortable and dry during your Camino journey. Choose shorts made from lightweight, breathable, and moisture-wicking materials like nylon or polyester. Quick-dry shorts are designed to dry rapidly after washing, making them ideal for travel.

Alternatively, a poncho offers full coverage and can be easily thrown over your backpack, providing extra protection for both you and your gear. Opt for a poncho made from durable, waterproof materials with reinforced seams and a secure fit. Both options should be easy to pack and quick to deploy, ensuring you stay dry during unexpected downpours.

Orthotics
Orthotics can be a crucial addition to your Camino packing list for providing extra support and comfort during long walks. These custom or over-the-counter insoles help correct foot alignment, distribute weight more evenly, and reduce strain on your feet, ankles, and knees. Before embarking on your journey, consult with a podiatrist to determine if orthotics are right for you and to get a custom fitting if necessary. Properly fitted orthotics can help prevent foot pain and injuries, ensuring you remain comfortable and able to enjoy your Camino experience to the fullest. Be sure to break them in before your trip to ensure they fit well and provide the desired support. Beware that custom orthotics may break from fatigue. Try to start with a newer pair.
